Vanna White

Vanna Marie Rosich was born on February 18, 1957, in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She attended the Atlanta School of Fashion Design and began working as a model during her late teens. Despite her beauty, it was her hands that first got her noticed, as she started out as a hand model, holding and displaying various products.

Her 10 fingers helped her make up to $1,000 a day, but Vanna hoped to get much more of herself seen. She took her portfolio to the Nina Blanchard Agency and secured an interview with the boss herself, but failed to get a contract because she was an inch too short.

With dreams of launching a career as an actress, White relocated to Los Angeles in 1980. She made her game show and overall national television debut as one of the first four contestants on The Price Is Right in June 1980, but never made it out of Contestant's Row.

She made her movie debut in Gypsy Angels later that year, and appeared in three films in 1981: she portrayed a Reston model in Looker, a high school cheerleader in Graduation Day, and another cheerleader in the made-for-TV movie Midnight Offerings.

In 1982, 25-year-old White tried out for the job as letter turner on the popular daytime game show The Wheel of Fortune, as a replacement for the departing Susan Stafford. The competition was stiff, with over 200 other young, attractive women auditioning for the same coveted gig. She made it amongst the top three finalists, and Merv Griffin, the show's producer, finally selected White to become Pat Sajak's assistant and co-host of the show. Vanna's Wheel of Fortune debut aired on December 13, 1982.

Her popularity and public recognition skyrocketed when the nighttime version of the game show premiered in September 1983; it became the top-rated program in syndication in 1984, thanks in part to the growing phenomenon known as "Vannamania."

White supplemented her Wheel of Fortune gig and got to hone her acting chops with guest appearances as herself on a number of top TV shows, starting with Gimme a Break! in February 1984. In January 1986, she guest-starred in an episode of The A-Team, aptly titled Wheel of Fortune.

She appeared in the debut episode of It's Garry Shandling's Show in September 1986, in the second season premiere of 227 in October of the same year in an episode called The Wheel of Misfortune, and played herself yet again in a March 1987 segment of Simon & Simon.

vanna speaks

White is mainly seen and rarely heard on Wheel of Fortune, so she had a lot to say in her 1987 autobiography, appropriately entitled Vanna Speaks The book became a national bestseller and, later that year, another side of her was seen in a Play..boy pictorial spread. The photos were taken before she landed her Wheel of Fortune job, and consisted of White in sexy see-through lingerie.

In 1988, she starred as Venus in the NBC made-for-TV movie Goddess of Love, and became the subject of a "Weird Al" Yankovic homage entitled "Stuck In A Closet With Vanna White," which appeared on his Even Worse album. The two eventually met when they shared a scene in Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult a few years later.

White continued to land minor acting roles, playing Roxanne in an episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! in November 1989. She also provided the voice of Lauri Saunders for the children's program Captain Planet and the Planeteers, made a guest appearance on The Howard Stern Show in November 1990, and appeared as herself in a couple of episodes of L.A. Law, one of which was cleverly named Vowel Play.

Vanna married restaurateur George Santo Pietro on New Year's Eve 1990.

The daytime edition of Wheel of Fortune was canceled the following year, but the top-rated syndicated evening edition continued to draw a huge viewership. Vanna guest-starred on Married... with Children in May 1993, and in a spoof of the film Indecent Proposal entitled The Proposition.

In 1994, she guest-starred on Full House and appeared in two feature films: as a news anchor in Double Dragon, and as herself in Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult.

Her son, Nicholas, was born in 1994, and daughter Giovanna followed in 1997.

In 1997, White's Wheel of Fortune title was altered from "letter turner" to "letter toucher" after the old manual board was switched to an updated electronic board. She continued to appear as herself on sitcoms like Style and Substance in February 1998, Just Shoot Me! in May 2000, The King of Queens in February 2001, and The Wayne Brady Show in October 2003.

Her marriage ended in divorce in 2002, due to irreconcilable differences, but White maintains custody of Nicholas and Giovanna. She is currently engaged to businessman Michael Kaye.
