Richard Gere
Richard Gere (born August 31, 1949 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American actor.
Gere was born in Philadelphia to devoutly Methodist parents of Anglo-Irish descent. He has three sisters, one brother and one half brother (Henry Januszewski). He is descended from a number of historical figures including many Mayflower passengers (Samuel Fuller, Francis Eaton, Francis Cooke, George Soule, John Billington, Degory Priest, William Brewster, and Richard Warren, and related to many presidents as well as to Princess Diana.[1]
In high school Gere excelled in gymnastics and music (he played the trumpet). He graduated in 1967 from North Syracuse Central High School. Gere attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst, but he left college after two years to pursue acting. He also pursued a professional trumpet career. He continued to perform in television, movies and theater throughout the 1970s.
Gere made his first impression in the original London stage version of Grease in 1973. His movie acting career took off in 1980 with the film American Gigolo and continued in 1982 with the popular romantic drama An Officer and a Gentleman.
He has been a deft romantic lead in films such as the huge hit Pretty Woman (1990) with Julia Roberts. In other cases his films have been artistic or commercial failures, and his box office appeal diminished later in the 1990s. He rebounded with heretofore unknown musical theatre talents in the acclaimed 2002 film Chicago, and followed that with ballroom dancing in the 2004 drama Shall We Dance.
He was formerly married to supermodel Cindy Crawford from 1991 to 1995. He married Carey Lowell in 2002 after dating for several years. They have a son, Homer James Jigme Gere, who was born in 2000. [2]
Gere is a well known Buddhist and an active supporter of the Dalai Lama. He has also been a persistent advocate for better human rights in Tibet, and was a co-founder of the Tibet House. He also campaigns for ecological causes and AIDS awareness.
He was the first man ever to appear on the cover of Vogue magazine. People magazine named him the 'Sexiest Man Alive' in 1999.
Richard Gere is Harvard's Hasty Pudding Theatricals' Man of the Year for 2006.
