Aniston and Depp are big People's Choice winners 2007-01-10
Forget the critics. The people spoke on Tuesday night and the best movie of the year was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and the best show on television is Grey's Anatomy. Those were the big winners for this year's People's Choice Awards, which brought dozens of actresses and celebrities to the red carpet, including Halle Berry, Jennifer Aniston, Cameron Diaz, and more. (Check out the galleries at left for pictures from the event).
It was the 33rd annual People's Choice Awards and the big winners on the evening were Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley and the rest of the gang in the biggest hit of the year, Dead Man's Chest. Other winners, according to the AP, include Jennifer Aniston, Ellen DeGeneres, Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, Nickelback, Justin Timberlake, Eva Longoria, and Patrick Dempsey. The People's Choice Awards give prizes in film, television, and music.
Eva Longoria laughed as she accepted her award for female television star and said "If it wasn't for the people, I'd never win an award."
Pirates wasn't the only film to win on Tuesday night - the Adam Sandler comedy Click and the Pixar smash Cars were also big winners for comedy and animated film of the year.
Johnny Depp accepted his award via satellite from London and said "I know that I've said this before. But the fact that this award comes from the people makes it all the more special. And thanks for keeping me employed, yeah? You're the boss."
The winners were picked by internet balloting. Depp was the favorite male star and Jennifer Aniston, who made a crack about her recent break-up with Vince Vaughn when she won, was chosen favorite female star. Favorite leading man and lady were Vaughn and Cameron Diaz. The action star awards went to Depp and Halle Berry. Depp won another award for on-screen matchup with Keira Knightley. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest won best movie drama and best movie overall.
According to E Online, Jennifer Aniston said "You all have supported me since the days of Friends, just through all of it. Good work, bad work and the ugly. I just thank you for continually inviting me back."
On the music side, Carrie Underwood was the big winner, taking home favorite female singer and favorite country song for her "Before He Cheats." Favorite male singer went to a country star too, Kenny Chesney, and Nickelback took best group. Justin Timberlake won best R&B song for "SexyBack", Eminem won best hip-hop song for "Shake That", Shakira won best pop song for "Hips Don't Lie", Bon Jovi won best rock song for "Who Says You Can't Go Home", and, finally, best song from a movie was "Life is a Highway" by Rascall Flatts from Cars.
The TV side went with the most popular shows - which makes sense if you think about it - as Two and a Half Men won best comedy along side Grey's Anatomy's best drama prize. The Simpsons won best animated comedy and American Idol took the reality show prize. New comedy went to CBS' The Class and NBC's Heroes won best new drama. Female star of the year was Longoria and male star went to Grey's Anatomy's Patrick Dempsey. Finally, Ellen DeGeneres won favorite talk show host and funny female star, while Robin Williams won funny male star, whatever that means.
When Charlie Sheen accepted for Two and a Half Men, the actor said "Without you guys, people like Jon [Cryer] and I would be doing puppet shows in our basement." To which, Jon Cryer responded "Platoon makes an excellent puppet show."
