Beverley Knight

Born on March 22, 1972, in Wolverhampton, England, Beverley Knight was actually born Beverley Ann Smith. She adopted the last name "Knight" as a stage name, just as her career began to blossom. Her deeply religious Jamaican parents frowned upon secular music and so Knight grew up on gospel music and joined the choir at the local Pentecostal church.

A singer since the age of 4 and a songwriter since 12, Knight showed signs of great talent from a young age. In 1987, encouraging words from her producer cousin Don-E got the wheels in motion for Beverley and she soon began performing at nightclubs.

Knight worked at it throughout university, where she was studying for a degree in theology, and perhaps it was an act of God that led to her discovery in 1994. While performing Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" at a club in England's Midlands, a scout for the independent label Dome Records took note of the aspiring singer.

Knight signed with Dome soon after and moved to London to begin recording. The result was The B-Funk, her very first album, which hit stores in 1995. This debut gave her another first, her first Top 40 hit with "Flava of the Old School."

Just as acclaim for the album and song were rolling in during the spring of 1996, a dispute with Dome Records put future projects that Knight had in mind on hold.

It wasn't until 1997, when Knight had left Dome and signed with Parlophone Records, a major label, that her career seemed safe again. Beverley came back on the R&B scene better than ever, releasing Prodigal Sista in 1998 to almost immediate widespread praise.

The songs "Made it Back" and "Greatest Day" helped Knight win a total of three MOBO awards -- UK's Music of Black Origin awards -- in 1998 and 1999.

A few highs and many lows would confront Knight during the making of her third album, the platinum-selling Who I Am. During recording, Knight befriended Tyrone Jamison and they became so close that they rented an apartment together. Soon after though, Jamison was diagnosed with an advanced case of HIV and, just as Knight was wrapping up a promotional tour of her new album in 2002, Jamison was rushed to the hospital with a severe case of pneumonia.

He died in February 2003, and this event, along with a trip to an HIV-ravaged town in Brazil on behalf of Christian Aid five months prior to Tyrone's death, greatly influenced her next album.

beverley knight releases affirmation

Affirmation was released in 2004, and features some of Knight's most introspective, emotional work to date. Upon its release, she had already performed for Muhammad Ali and Nelson Mandela and worked with the likes of Wyclef Jean and Musiq.

Beverley believed that this album was one of her greatest musical accomplishments. The track "Keep This Fire Burning" was a popular radio release and Affirmation continued the string of hit albums that Knight started making in 1995.

Big-hearted Knight -- aside from her charitable work in support of the fight against AIDS -- is also a strong supporter of breast cancer-related charities and is an outspoken proponent of gay rights.

Currently, she lives in North London with her boyfriend Kelvin.
